Regents Brydon Turning Over Reins

Austin, TX - Regents School of Austin announced today Beck Brydon has stepped aside as Varsity Head Football Coach after 20 years to focus on leading the growing Regents Athletics program in his continued role as Director of Athletics. Brydon has named current Regents Defensive Coordinator Tim Phillips as the new Varsity Head Football Coach. Coach Brydon will stay involved in Regents football by helping lead the middle school program.

“Coach Brydon has had an outstanding career winning on the field and, most importantly, shepherding our student athletes in their walk with the Lord and pursuing his passion of redeeming sports for Christ,” Regents Head of School Dr. Dan Peterson said.

Brydon has had a tenure hard to match in Texas high school football. He helped start the Regents tackle football program in 1997 when it launched as an 11-man middle school program. In 2000, he was hired as the school’s first Varsity Head Football Coach for 6-man varsity football and then for 11-man varsity football starting in 2004. Over 20 seasons, Coach Brydon has a record of 197-52, and he led Regents to the playoffs all 20 years. His teams won 15 District Championships and played for 11 TAPPS State Titles, winning five of them (2001, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2010).

“Measuring success of this program over the past 23 years is difficult,” Brydon said. “The winning and championship runs have been really fun, but they only tell a portion of the story.  How do you measure the types of men, husbands, fathers, servants, leaders, neighbors, and community members that our players and coaches are, have, or will become?”

“This day is both sad and exciting for me and my family. Our children were virtually born and raised on that football field, and we have tons of great memories from this program.  We are also excited though, knowing that this program is in good hands. I have complete confidence in Coach Phillips. He is the right guy for the job at this time. I am looking forward to supporting him and our coaches as they lead our kids moving forward.”
Tim Phillips has coached Regents football for nine seasons, most recently as Defensive Coordinator for the last four years. Phillips played quarterback at Kent State University and coached football at the University of Kansas for nine seasons from 1988-1997.

“This football program has meant so much to me and my family for many years,” Phillips said.  “I have loved serving our school in a coaching role and am excited to move the ball forward on this special program. When Coach Brydon says to you ‘I think you’re the guy to lead this thing forward,’ there really is no bigger compliment.  So I’m thankful for his confidence and belief in me.”
