Knights Swim Finishes Strong at TAPPS State Champs
The Varsity Boys and Girls Swim teams were back in the water for the last time this season for the state championship meet at Bill Walker Pool in San Antonio on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021.
The girls swam the morning session, and started strong in the field of 23 by dropping seven seconds off their 200 Medley Relay seed time for a 7th place finish. Caitlin Elizondo took 4th in the 100 Freestyle and 5th in the 100 Backstroke, Ella White took 5th in the 200-yard Free, and our 200 Free and 400 Free relays both finished 3rd. Add it all up and they claimed the 4th place team finish in TAPPS Division II! With every girl clocking at least one season best, spirits were high and smiles were plentiful as they closed out the season and headed back to Austin.
The boys hit the water in the afternoon session, digging deep to balance individual swims and relay duties. The 200 Free and 400 Free relays saw the Knights finish 4th and 6th respectively in the field of 21 teams. Chris Jones grabbed a 3rd in the 50 Free and a 5th in the 100 Back, with best times in both events. Gideon Kim and Josh Moore both swam season bests in the 100 Free, each going under one minute for the first time! Andrew Zou swam strong in the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Breaststroke, finishing 2nd in both and garnering a third-place point total in the Swimmer of the Meet competition. Overall, the boys each posted at least one season best time, and finished 7th of 21 teams. They celebrated with Oreo milkshakes at Chick-Fil-A on the drive home.
Coach Hangliter (nee Thompson) was proud of both groups, not only for swimming fast but for the effort and attitude shown down the stretch to prepare for Champs in what was a very atypical season. Full meet results can be found here.
Coach Turner would like to thank super team mom Heidi Jones for her hours of attention, enthusiasm and service to the team, the other volunteer parents that decorated Rhetoric to the 9’s on Sunday afternoon, James Elizondo for driving team vans and taking great images this season, and Trisha Elizondo for serving us and all of TAPPS with an all-day shift as a stroke and turn judge at yesterday’s meet.
