And They’re Off!: SOR Track at the SAS Relays
SOR Knights Track & Field opened the competitive season at the St. Andrew’s School Relays on Saturday, March 6th. Good opening meet times were turned in by many, some new events were tried by a few, and yes, there was an occasional trip or tardy relay exchange, not uncommon at the first meet of the year.
Coach Turner has challenged this year’s team to show up and be noteworthy not only for their performance in events, but also in the way they are united in encouragement of one another and other teams’ athletes. Fist bumps and “Good jobs” were seen and heard at the finish line of many of the sprints and relays, and Anna Newport stood out for her consistent presence and praise for her teammates as they crossed the line and stumbled toward the infield to catch their breath.
A few highlights included 1st Place in the Varsity Boys Discus by Carter Smith, a 2nd Place in the Varsity Girls Long Jump by Madision Wu, and 2nd Place and 3rd Place in the Varsity Girls 200m Dash by Anna Newport and Becca Ueltschey. Both Varsity 4x100m Relays took 3rd Place, and Madison Wu and Faith Phillips finished in 2nd and 3rd Places respectively in the Girls 100m Dash.
The morning JV session saw the debut of many new Knights tracksters at the SOR level. Abigail Strickland took 1st in Shot Put, Cheyanna Frazier matched that with a 1st in the 200m Dash, Sean Anderson took 2nd in the Boys Discus, and Barrett Grevelle grabbed 2nd in the 800 meters. Emily Hine grabbed three medals - 1st Place in Long Jump, 3rd in the 100m Dash, and 3rd in the 200m Dash. Kat Carter took 3rd in the tough Girls 400m race, and the Boys 4x100m Relay of Shep Dollahon, Barrett Grevelle, John Mills and Drew Dickey secured 2nd Place in that race.
