SOL Blazes to Second Place Team Finishes
The Knights 6th and SOL Track teams traveled to Westwood H.S. for the first CAPPS meet of the season on Saturday, March 27th to measure their progress against nine other league teams. Talented but compact, the boys and girls at both levels raced well and brought home three 2nd place trophies.
First up was the Long Jump. With Track parents Julie Thomas and Robert Gleason running two pits (thank you!), almost 60 kids got through the event efficiently prior to the running events. When all jumps were tallied, Avery Lickteig, Rylie Chiles and Lyla Thomas had captured 3rd, 5th and 6th places for 5th/6th grade girls, Grayton Eustace and Fletcher Clark grabbed 1st and 5th for the 7th/8th boys, and Grace Dierking and Abby Gleason took 3rd and 4th for the 7th/8th grade girls.
Then the running began. The 5th/6th Girls 4x100m relay team of Chiles, Thomas, Lickteig and Maddie Hendrix took first going away, winning by five seconds! The 7th/8th grade boys and girls 4x100m relays ran fast but found exchanges to be a challenge. The 1600m 7/8 boys race saw Christian Hooten and Landon Turner take 1st and 3rd in dramatic fashion, with Hooten edging out the second place runner by 0.02 seconds at the line to set a new Regents SOL record by one second, and Turner tracking down three runners in the final lap to come in two seconds later. Amelia Weenig turned in a 6:01.12, good for 2nd place in the 7/8 girls event.
Clayton Choy and Ben Ueltschey held down duties for the 5th/6th grade boys, running three events each, with Ueltschey clocking a 13th place in the 50m Dash and Choy grabbing a 1st in the 50m and 3rd in the 100m event.
Many more battles were waged and medals won. Full results can be found HERE
. The Knights will be back at it on Friday, April 9th at the second CAPPS Invitational within even more schools in attendance.
