Karen grew up in Katy, Texas, but after attending The University of Texas, graduating in 1998 with a degree in elementary education with a math specialization, she decided to call Austin home. She spent 2 years as a missionary in China before starting her career at Regents though. She has been in this community since 2001, as a teacher for 6th grade, 5th grade math, 2nd grade, and most currently in kindergarten, but also as a Regents mom and a math tutor. Karen serves as a Math Consultant for other Classical Christian schools, as well as a Math support for K-3 teachers and parents. After a wedding shower at the Regents garden, she married Frank on 7/7/7, where her 2nd grade class recited in the ceremony. She had a baby shower in the grammar conference room, so has spent many formative years as an adult in the Regents community. For fun, Karen loves gardening, crafting, baking and playing cards or travelling with her husband and two kids (Ruthie 8th grade, Dominic 4th grade).

This begins my 20th year teaching at Regents and my second year in SOR. Since God led me here after being on the mission field in Russia for two years, I have certainly received more from the Regents community than I could ever give. In fact, I joke that in my first year I should have paid the school for all the things I learned about a Christ-centered marriage and raising kids. Though my degrees are in Finance and German, I teach Latin here at Regents. I have taught in all three divisions -- something I consider a unique gift. I loved my experiences with each team and age level.

During this COVID quarantine, my husband and I have discovered how much we really like each other. We have been baking sourdough, brewing kombucha and going for long walks. We are both Longhorns but have a 20 year old son that just finished his freshman year at Westmont in Santa Barbara, CA.

This year brings some big events for Jen. By the time this school year ends, her oldest son, Noah (Class of 2019), will graduate from th Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Matt and she will mark their 28th wedding anniversary, and she will celebrate her 10th year as an employee of Regents. Her son Jim (Class of 2022) is returning to the University of Texas for his Sophomore year and Jen's daughter Annie is in 11th grade in SOR. As a professional, Jen’s first teaching experience was with elementary-aged girls at the Texas School for the Deaf in 1993 and she has been in the “Kid Business” ever since. From teaching High School to Baby Sign Language, from coaching preschool Soccer to teaching Middle School, Jen has enjoyed watching children develop in all areas of their lives. Nine years ago, She started teaching 4th Grade here at Regents, and immediately fell in love with this stage of childhood development. The kids in Middle Grammar are curious, respectful, and full of the joy of learning. What a blessing it has been for her to spend such valuable moments with them, learning from each of them as she hopes they are learning from her. This is her fifth year in Grammar Administration, serving as the Associate Head over 3rd and 4th Grades. Jen is also working on her Doctor of Education degree through Bayor University. Her personal prayer for this year is from Romans 8, verses they learn and memorize in Middle Grammar. “If God is for us, who can be against us...Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger or sword...No, for I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

One of the many joys Megan finds in teaching is using imagination and storytelling to help children understand God’s redemptive story and delight in the creativity he has given us as image-bearers.
